In our mosaic workshops you’ll learn the basics of ancient stone mosaic, and perhaps mix it up with gorgeous recycled coloured ceramics and Venetian and Mexican glass.
In this one-day mosaic class in the Ashton Park Art Shed, you can bring your own ideas, or choose from a range of contemporary or Roman designs and learn to cut stone/ceramic tiles (or glass smalti) to make a small mosaic panel you can take home.
Learn the basics of using a traditional hammer and hardi, and the marble cutter.
NB: Working in stone can take some extra time – so some people like to leave their work overnight and finish the finer details in their own time the next day, or a later weekend before taking it home. You are very welcome to do this as part of the workshop fee.

History of mosaic making
Throughout the centuries of mosaic development, floor mosaics have been the most common.
According to the Oxford Bibliographies the earliest Green and Roman decorated mosaics appeared in the late 5th century BCE in Greece using black and white pebbles.
It wasn’t unitl much later – estimated to be around the 3rd century BCE – that mosaics were made with stone, glass or ceramic cut into cubes (tesserae).
And, finally in the 1st century BCE mosaics began being used for decorating walls and vaults in Italy.
If you’re looking for inspiration, the Ancient History Encyclopedia has some beautiful examples of Roman mosaics to get you creative juices running.
